About
This semester’s work was inspired by two events happening in the 80’s. One was the women's empowerment movement and finally chipping away at the glass ceiling. Women during this time were commanding power but had to do so under the disguise of the pin stripe and power suit to gain respect from the men around them. Ironically during this time, my family was on the opposite end of things and was just starting off their journey to america through the migrant worker process. My dad was a migrant worker on an orange farm which was the start of a long process of gaining residency. While women in the 80’s were breaking free from domesticated stereotypes my family was just starting their new life in America.
The Hispanic Culture is still so many years behind in the empowerment of women that this collection is an homage to me finally having my “power suit moment” of working towards a career. If it wasn’t for my family going through the migrant worker process I wouldn't be the empowered woman I am today.
